Power Up! program boosts academic support for kids across the Niagara Region

BGC Niagara offers a variety of programming dedicated providing opportunities for children and youth to develop confidence and skills for life. One such program is Kids Zone, where children can connect for fun with their peers, access recreation opportunities and access homework support.

This year, Kids Zone was superpowered with the support of Power Up!, a national program that provides kids with the tools they need to reach academic goals.

Offered to children aged 6-12 at BGC’s across the country, the Power Up! program:

• Helps kids develop positive study habits and practices at school
• Encourages kids to set academic goals, and develop an interest in life-long learning
• Offers volunteer tutoring and mentoring services to ensure that participants have the tools and environment necessary to achieve academic success

BGC Niagara is proud to be running the program for children and youth in Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Fort Erie, Thorold and Chippawa. Across the five sites, 530 Power Up! program participants are receiving homework help, assistance with literacy and numeracy, and academic exploring and building.

A student who participated in the program shared, “The reason I love getting help with my homework at BGC Niagara is that when I get home I now have time to do the things I want to do like play with my pets, ride my bike, watch a show, or play with my toys before it’s bedtime. I also feel happy knowing I did my homework the right way with the help from the staff.”
